Shape Walk

Gamifying walking, because not everyone is a marathoner

iOS walking app that maps shapes onto your neighborhood. Follow GPS-guided routes in squares, circles, spirals, and more. Syncs to Apple Health with background GPS and haptic waypoint feedback.

I spent over a decade running ultramarathons, including a 220 km race around Hungary's Balaton lake. When I shifted to walking, I found myself bored by the usual fitness metrics — step counts, calories, distances all just accumulating numbers. That's when I thought: what if the walk itself had a shape? Not a destination, just a form you impose on the streets around you and trace with your feet.

Shape Walk gives you 15 different shapes to walk: squares, circles, triangles, spirals, hearts, arrows, and more. The app maps each shape onto your current location, scales it to fit real walking distances between 0.9 and 3 kilometers, and drops waypoint markers at every corner. Follow the route, feel haptic feedback at each turn, close the loop. Each completed walk becomes part of your personal trace collection — a record of actual things you did, not just accumulated numbers.

The app is built for being outside, not staring at a screen. Background GPS works with the phone in your pocket. The map rotates to your heading automatically. Waypoint haptics tell you when to turn. Everything syncs to Apple Health, and your completed routes are saved with distance, calories, and your actual walking path. It's simple: pick a shape, walk it, feel the difference between arbitrary exercise and purposeful movement.
